CONSTRUCT A BIRDWATCHING 'BLIND'
If you try to get close to birds, they will fly away. A birdwatching 'blind' is a tent or shelter where you can get close to them, but they will not see you. For this project, you will need a tarp, quilt, sheet, or cover, a ladder, a step chair, or small bench, a brick, a magic marker, and a scissor. Adult supervision will be needed.

1. Set up the ladder with the step chair or bench under the ladder.

2. Place the tarp or cover over the ladder. Place a brick on the tarp so it does not move. With a magic marker, write 'front' and place 2 marks on the tarp so you will know how to place the tarp for future use.

3. With adult help, use a scissor to cut a window out of the tarp. Don't go near the 'blind' for several days. Then when you enter the 'blind' and watch the birds, they will be used to the 'blind'.

Does a 'blind' really work? Both pictures of the Black-capped Chickadee are taken by the same camera. The top picture is taken about 25' away. The bottom picture is taken from the 'blind'. You can get closer without scaring off the birds.
